Review Lap v0.3.2 - Local AI-powered Photo manager

Lap is a free and open-source photo manager designed for large local photo and video collections. Instead of uploading media to a cloud service or forcing files into a proprietary library, Lap works directly with existing folders and keeps its catalog and AI data on the local computer. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux.

The application combines photo browsing, organization, searching, duplicate cleanup, face recognition, and basic editing in one desktop interface. It is particularly aimed at users managing large personal libraries and claims to be optimized for collections containing more than 100,000 files.

Features

Lap provides a folder-first approach to photo management. Existing photos and videos remain ordinary files in their existing folders instead of being locked inside an application-specific storage system.

Its browsing and organization tools include:

Lap also includes local AI capabilities. Users can search using natural-language descriptions, find visually similar images, identify subjects, cluster faces, and optionally perform multilingual searches in more than 50 languages. These AI functions run locally rather than requiring a cloud AI service.

The application supports Apple Live Photos and Google Motion Photos, while RAW and JPEG or HEIC pairs can be displayed as a single item. It also supports RAW thumbnail generation and a wide range of photo, RAW, and video formats.

Basic editing tools are included for cropping, rotating, flipping, resizing, and image adjustments.

Lap v0.3.2 - Local AI-powered Photo manager Release Notes:

Lap v0.3.2 brings new ways to explore, import, and organize your photo library. Discover geotagged photos in Map View, play Google Motion Photos, import media into date-based folders, and clean up duplicates across the library. This release also adds sharper thumbnails for large displays, configurable RAW previews, and important fixes for selection, album handling, and Linux AppImage compatibility.

Highlights

  • Map View — Explore geotagged photos and videos on an interactive map directly from the main toolbar. The map follows your current view and filters, groups nearby items into clusters with photo counts, and lets you open a cluster to browse its photos. Return to the map without losing your position or zoom. (#223)

  • Google Motion Photos — Play the embedded video in supported Google/Android Motion Photo JPEGs instead of seeing only the still image. Motion Photos are recognized in existing libraries and appear alongside Apple Live Photos through the unified Live & Motion Photos Smart Album condition. (#18)

  • Import and Organize by Date — Import photos and videos from a folder into an album, automatically organizing them by day, month, year, or a single destination folder. The workflow preserves original filenames, supports RAW files and Apple adjustment sidecars, skips duplicate content, and provides progress, cancellation, and continuation controls. (#86)

  • Library-Wide Duplicate Cleanup — Review the space you can reclaim and delete removable copies across all duplicate sets in one action, while preserving the keep choice for each set. (#291)

  • Sharper Thumbnails and Configurable RAW Previews — Choose thumbnail resolutions up to 1024 px and larger grid sizes for high-resolution displays. For RAW files, choose between RAW rendering and the camera’s embedded preview, with consistent thumbnail and preview behavior. (#274, #275, #269)

New Features and Improvements

  • Added a Tianditu map provider option for browsing maps in China, configurable with your own API token.

  • Added date-based import layouts including YYYY/YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY/YYYY-MM, and YYYY. Capture dates are used when available, with file modification dates as a fallback. Imported files appear in the album without a separate full scan. (#86)

  • Added import summaries showing imported, skipped, and failed files, plus safeguards against importing between identical or nested source and destination folders.

  • Added thumbnail quality profiles of 256, 512, and 1024 px, with corresponding grid-size ranges up to 180, 360, and 720 px. (#274)

  • Added a RAW thumbnail source setting: RAW Rendering remains the default, while Embedded preview offers the camera-generated image. Both options fall back to the alternative when necessary. (#275, #269)

  • Added a Thumbnail corners setting to choose between theme-defined corners and square thumbnails. (#74)

  • Added a small-image filter with 160, 320, and 640 px thresholds. It hides an item only when both dimensions are below the threshold, reducing clutter from icons and tiny previews without excluding files from scanning or indexing. Visible results and counts stay consistent across browsing and search. (#258)

  • Removed the 1,000-result cap from visual/semantic search and the 10-result cap for regular text, filename, and metadata matches in unified search. Search similarity now consistently controls the relevance cutoff for keyword photo searches. (#279)

  • Added automatic loading of additional people as you scroll through the People list. (#279)

  • Added a double-click preference to open photos and videos in Quick Preview or a separate viewer window. (#281)

  • Unified collection and tag editing. Add or remove selected photos directly in Edit collections, and create, rename, or delete tags from Edit tags, with consistent selection states and feedback. (#283)

  • Added a Set As menu for assigning an album cover or setting the selected image as desktop wallpaper. Wallpaper support is available on macOS, Windows, and GNOME Linux, including suitable companion images from RAW+JPEG pairs. (#292)

  • Added Page Up and Page Down navigation for browsing photo results. (#296)

  • Restored Random sorting for rediscovering photos. Grouping is disabled while Random sorting is active. (#303)

  • Improved Calendar browsing with a Year → Month → Day hierarchy, Years/Months/Days tabs, localized month names, and counts at each level.

  • Added Camera and Lens tabs with group counts, and kept sidebar item counts visible beside the more menu.

  • Added support for managing multiple external applications and choosing a default application.

  • Improved File Info with people avatars, an album-cover indicator, clickable previews, and navigation to camera, lens, and location views. Empty tags, collections, and comments are hidden.

  • Added counterclockwise view rotation and improved video zooming around the cursor, with panning constrained consistently with the image viewer.

  • Improved handling of unavailable albums on removable drives and network storage, retaining their cached folder trees and rechecking availability when accessed.

  • Reworked subfolder refresh to update the folder hierarchy without regenerating thumbnails or requiring a full media scan.

  • Added a language selector to the welcome screen and preserved the left panel’s expanded or collapsed state between sessions.

  • Reorganized Browse and Grid settings and improved labels and translations across supported languages.

  • Added embedded AppImage update information and companion .zsync files for delta updates through compatible tools such as AppImageUpdate and AppImageLauncher. (#284)

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed missing iPhone video camera metadata, including make, model, and software information stored in Apple QuickTime tags, completing the follow-up to the iPhone video import report. (#221)

  • Fixed multilingual search-model downloads failing on slow connections by increasing the connection timeout from 3 to 30 seconds and displaying more useful download errors. (#272)

  • Fixed duplicate, ghost, and unexpectedly cleared selections in Multi-Select mode, and preserved selection and panel state during content refreshes. (#267)

  • Fixed AppImage startup failures and blank windows caused by bundled runtime conflicts on newer Linux distributions, including the reported Fedora 44 GNOME and Wayland cases. (#224, #270, #271)

  • Fixed AppImage startup on pure-Wayland systems without XWayland, while respecting an explicitly selected display backend. (#271)

  • Fixed AppImage GStreamer plugin discovery and runtime-library conflicts that could prevent video and audio playback. (#271)

  • Fixed the Settings button becoming unresponsive after closing the Settings window, so reopening no longer requires restarting Lap. (#285)

  • Fixed excessive thumbnail blur for very wide or tall images by avoiding over-reduction of their short edge. (#286)

  • Fixed explicitly selected album roots being skipped because they report hidden attributes, including Windows NTFS drive roots that previously indexed zero files. Hidden child files and folders remain excluded. (#288)

  • Fixed the “Drop files to import” overlay remaining visible after internal drag-and-drop operations such as album reordering. (#289)

  • Fixed stale album covers by repairing invalid cover references when loading the album list. (#247)

  • Prevented adding albums whose folders overlap an existing album, avoiding conflicting folder trees and synchronization behavior.

  • Fixed collection badges and File Info membership remaining stale after removing photos from collections or deleting a collection.

  • Fixed redundant sidebar and Smart Album content reloads, reducing unnecessary queries and interruptions during browsing.

  • Fixed thumbnail flicker during album scanning.

  • Fixed empty filmstrip results leaving preview and navigation controls visible, while preserving the filmstrip preference for later results.

  • Fixed slideshows continuing after leaving filmstrip mode or entering Map View.

  • Fixed rename dialogs reopening unexpectedly during keyboard navigation. (#296)

  • Fixed close-button press-and-hold behavior and improved confirmation and cancellation handling so actions occur on mouse release. (#268)

  • Fixed repeated duplicate-deletion submissions and deletion handling for unloaded items in large, virtualized result lists.

  • Fixed unreadable images leaving People indexing permanently incomplete.

  • Fixed Windows COM initialization error handling.

Performance and Compatibility

Lap is built with Tauri and Rust for its core, with a Vue, Vite, and Tailwind CSS frontend. It uses SQLite for its local data. The project uses LibRaw, libheif, FFmpeg, ONNX Runtime, CLIP, and InsightFace for media processing and local AI functionality.

The application is designed around large local libraries and has been optimized for collections containing 100,000 or more files. Its local-first design also means that photos do not need to be uploaded to an external service.

One important consideration is that not all organization data is stored inside the original photo files. Collections, tags, comments, ratings, favorites, culling states, Smart Albums, AI data, thumbnails, and indexes are stored in Lap's local database or configuration. This information therefore does not automatically follow a photo when it is moved or copied outside Lap.

The project supports macOS on both Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows 10 and 11 on x64 and ARM64, and Linux on x64 and ARM64. The current release provides DEB and AppImage packages for Linux.

System Requirements

Lap supports:

Linux users can install Lap using DEB or AppImage packages. macOS users can also install it through Homebrew.

No specific minimum RAM or CPU requirement is published in the project's documentation. Because local AI features such as image search and face recognition require model inference, actual resource usage will depend on the size of the library and which AI features are being used.

How to Install

Download the appropriate package from the Lap GitHub releases page.

On Windows, choose the x64 or ARM64 MSI package depending on the system architecture.

On macOS, choose the Apple Silicon or Intel DMG package. The project also supports Homebrew:

brew tap julyx10/lap
brew install --cask lap

On Debian-based Linux distributions, install the appropriate DEB package. AppImage packages are also available for Linux.

After launching Lap, add an existing photo folder or library and allow the application to scan and index the media. AI search and other local analysis features can then build their required indexes.

Final Verdict

Lap is a capable local photo manager aimed at users who want more than a basic folder browser but do not want to move their entire photo collection into a cloud service.

Its combination of local AI search, face clustering, duplicate detection, Smart Albums, RAW support, map browsing, and direct filesystem management gives it a broad feature set. The folder-first design is also useful for users who want to retain control of their original files.

The main consideration is the separation between the original media and Lap's local database. Tags, ratings, collections, AI data, and other organizational information are not automatically embedded into the files, so the Lap database should be included in backups if that information is important.
